On April 02 1999, the circles had disappeared; Channel 4 had adopted a new boxed logo. The channel deliberately opted for a minimalist approach with its idents; they consisted of a series of vertical, coloured bars scrolling across the screen, from left to right. The format of the idents was updated in late-1999, with the '4' logo animating on-screen in new ways; the soundtrack was also revised. The coloured bars were also now translucent in many of the idents, revealing background imagery such as road markings and trees. In April 2001, the Channel 4 website URL - 'channel4.com' - was added to all idents. Prior to this, the URL only appeared on idents where the subsequent programme had content on the site.
