A FAMILY OF ARTISTS Four Dutch siblings are to exhibit paintings, photographies and sculptures in the latest show to be mounted by Barcelonas Gràcia Arts Project. Under the title Struggle and Armistice, Paul, Erna, Victor and Wiglius de Bie all born and bred in Groningen, the Netherlands offer individual reflections of their family, past and life. The four have all excelled across a wide spectrum of different media. Paul is a painter (Fine Art Academy Minerva, Groningen 1998), Erna a sculptor (Fine Art Academy Minerva, Groningen 2002), Victor a fashion artist (Fine Art Academy Rietveld, Amsterdam in 2001) and Wiglius a photographer (Fine Art Academy Sint Joost, Breda 2000). Despite sharing common influences, including the catholicism of their Belgian roots and the weekly ritual of Donald Duck, the siblings promise a varied display ranging from sculpture to fashion accessories. Similarities in their work can mainly be found in the subject matter, which often seems to be strongly infused with a certain fin-de-siècle melancholy. Paul, the eldest, explores the psychology of his subjects, resulting in portraits with a magical realist touch in which he makes use of a wide range of symbols. His sister, Erna, creates 3D geometrical objects to visualize a rational and immaterial environment, a world in which everything is explicable. Victors paintings are known for the distinctive use of bright colours, often bizarre subject matters and the many momentary self-portraits he creates, encapsulated in his imaginary faces. The youngest in the family, Wiglius, finds inspiration in images from the past, sometimes directly related to family (his great-grandfather was a well-known photographer). He makes timeless images that are poetic and narrative. www.mariepauldebie.com www.wigliusdebie.com www.ernadebie.nl www.victordebie.com
