Walter Donaldson had many hit songs, but this one probably was the biggest. It's a later song, from 1927, with lyrics by George Whiting. http://www.frederickhodges.com Frederick Hodges can be heard regularly throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. See his website (link above) for places and times. He also will be giving piano lessons prior to the 22nd annual West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento this November. His web site has details on how to schedule a lesson. And of course, his web site has details on how to order his recordings and DVDs. This performance was during the 10th annual Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival in Sutter Creek, California. Of course, many people only know this song from the recording made by Fats Domino 30 years after the tune had been a hit the first time.

Sep 5, 2008 - One of the first viewers! Yes..=) This is a very full arrangement of My Blue Heaven! I can't help but being amazed at the many novelty breaks, and cadenza-like runs up and down the keys. Thanks for the video, Ron! Did you perchance get any of Tom playing any of his compositions?

Keeper1st Says:

Sep 5, 2008 - Yes. Speaking of blue, I got him playing Blue Lampshade, also a pretty good close-up on the hands. And wait 'til you hear how he played Redneck Rag (though of course we all know that was composed by "Brian March", yeah...). aaaand I have two videos of Tom making stuff up, so that counts! Stay tuned...

Sep 5, 2008 - Blue Lampshade?!?!? That's awesome.. I cannot wait to see that one. Keep on the lookout on my channel - I'll be posting one of Tom's more obscure novelties that we heard last year during our talk with Dave Jasen - I'm finished learning it, so now I just need to polish it and find a piano! By the way - I'm not sure how interested you are in hearing some of my new novelty rags - but I've written two new ones, and I can email them to you if you like!

Sep 5, 2008 - Of course I'm interested!

Sep 15, 2008 - Sounds like Liberace on ecstasy.

Nov 12, 2008 - Liberace couldn't carry Dr. Hodges' piano stool, and I like Liberace.
